Chemical Exposure from Home Renovations
When you begin a home renovation, you may be at risk of chemical exposure. Chemicals and dangerous materials are particularly common in older homes that were built before 1980. You can reduce your risk by learning to identify and safely remove hazardous materials.
Learn About the Dangers
One of the biggest dangers of remodeling your home is exposure to asbestos. This material was once used in siding and insulation for homes, but was later linked to many serious illnesses. You should not touch or damage asbestos because tiny particles from the material can be released.
Once released, the particles can be inhaled and lead to lung damage or mesothelioma. If you do have damaged asbestos, the EPA recommends hiring a professional removal team. Undamaged asbestos should be left intact and undisturbed, if possible. Legally, only buildings built before 1975 have asbestos containing materials.

Lead Risks
Lead paint is also a major risk during renovations that require removing paint. Lead paint was used in older homes and businesses. Additionally, it is impossible to know whether lead paint has been used, and may be underneath other layers of paint. Testing can be very useful in detecting lead paint in your home.
Lead is particularly dangerous to children. The material, when ingested, can cause developmental delays and other health issues. In both lead and asbestos, the biggest danger occurs when the material is disturbed, such as in a home renovation, and particles of the material become airborne. There are a few methods used that can prevent particles from becoming airborne.
Renovating Safely
Remodeling an older home may be necessary when replacements and upgrades are needed. In order to renovate as safely as possible, you will need to have a professional complete testing on suspected dangers. You can also use a wet removal method to ensure dust and small particles don't become airborne.
Dusting, sweeping, or vacuuming in areas where these materials are present is not recommended. Instead, you should wet the dust particles before cleaning. Using a damp mop or damp cloth is the best option when cleaning after a remodeling project, as well.
